this -- you have people like scott brown in massachusetts, linda lingle in hawaii heather wilson in new mexico who were good statewide candidates with good credentials who lost for one reason -- they had "r" next to their name. it did not hurt heidi heidkamp or jon tester. this is an albatross for the republicans to deal with. the president knows he has the advantage, and the republicans have to get beyond this if they become combative as a party. >> any wiggle room in the house charles? >> i don't understandnd when colby says that for the president raisising rates is s a matter of principle. there is no principle here. the president himself said at the july 2011 press conference that if you raise the $1.20 trillion that he wanted at the time without raising rates, by eliminating deductions and exclusions, which is t the more rational way. obama's on a debt reduction commission recommended that you raise tens of revenue with the fedel govovernment, you do tax reform and you actually lower rates while you e expand the base, and if you raisise rates, you e going to injure e economic expansion.

for safeguarding the nation at prof harbor and other military facilities on the island of oahu in hawaii. on 7:53 in the morning, without warning, the japanese launched a massive air attack against pearl harbor and other military bases on that island. when the attack ended, almost 3000 americans have lost their lives. a total of 21 ships were demolished. 188 aircraft were destroyed. most of those aircraft were destroyed before they could become airborne. after the attack, president franklin roosevelt stated this day, december 7, as a day which will live in infamy. and it has. we gather to remember that attack on pearl harbor and honor those who received the blow of that first strike. and also remember and honor all those who served in world war ii. it is my pleasure today to represent the friends of the national world war ii memorial. an organization dedicated to ensuring that we always remember the greatest generation and their service, valor, and sacrifice. all those who supported on the home front. to achieve this, we worked very closely and proudly with the national parks service and with

's devastating surprise attack on hawaii's pearl harbor fanned the flames of national hysteria, particularly on the west coast. more than 100,000 japanese-americans were ordered to pack their things. the uchidas were forced to leave their home in pasadena, california. >> they were first, actually, put in the santa anita racetrack where they lived for about six months in actual horse stables, and they actually had to clean out the stables and make it livable. and then, after that period, they were moved to gila river, which is in arizona. >> like so many other families, the uchidas were relocated to detention camps in remote areas of the country. >> they lived in barracks that really didn't have any insulation. it was hot, it was dry, it was windy, and it was very cold in the wintertime, as well. >> with the end of the war, the japanese-americans were finally released, but the shame stung. that's why jenny's father, craig, helped raise money for this memorial in washington, d.c. it's official name is "the national japanese-american memorial for patriotism dung world war ii." on the walls are
